STANDARD FIVE - Managerial Leadership
School executives will ensure that the school has processes and systems in place for budgeting, staffing, problem solving, communicating expectations and scheduling that result in organizing the work routines in the building. The school executive must be responsible for the monitoring of the school budget and the inclusion of all teachers in the budget decisions so as to meet the 21st century needs of every classroom. Effectively and efficiently managing the complexity of every day life is critical for staff to be able to focus its energy on improvement.

Budget Coding
During my class with Dr. Charles Price, we learned about budget and codes. As a school administrator is imperative that I understand what budget codes mean. These codes tell me where the money is coming from, its purpose, what is being purchased, and the school location. School budgets are essential to school operations and I now know how to look at them more critically.

5B - Conflict Management and Resolution
The school executive effectively and efficiently manages the complexity of human interactions so that the focus of the school can be on improved student achievement.
Crucial Conversations
As a part of my coursework, we were trained in Crucial Conversations which focused on learning how to have high stakes conversations. I was tasked to have a high stakes conversation and evaluate what happened through a reflection. This assignment made me pay attention to silence and violence and my own communication style under stress.

Teacher Working Conditions Survey
At KES, the administrative team consults the North Carolina Teacher Working Conditions Survey to determine areas of focus regarding improvements of school practice. From the Teacher Working Conditions we identified that we needed to improve in the following areas: atmosphere of trust and mutual respect (77.8%) and students at this school follow rules of conduct (74.1%). Using this data, we determined that this year's focus would be professional development that provided a deep dive with the teaching staff where we worked to get to the root of the issues.

Storm Chasers
I meet monthly with the Storm Chasers team which is comprised of administration, school counselors, and social worker. As a team, we created a watch list of students. During these meetings, we looked at preventative measures that could be put in place to support students on the watch list. We also worked to generate a list of students at KES and given them ACE scores based on childhood trauma (which is confidential). As the school year progressed the team also use Progress Monitoring Data to create a watch list and manage the MTSS process with our students.

Restorative Circle
I am the administrator assigned for the First Grade Professional Learning Team. This team was having conflict amongst the teachers on the grade level and were struggling to collaborate due to damaged relationships. I conducted a restorative circle with the entire team in October with hopes of creating a safe space for dialogue to help repair the damaged relationships. In December, we held a follow-up to the circle to see how the group was progressing. The artifact shown in the recap focused on the initial issues which were micromanagement, delegation, respect, professionalism, teamwork, communication and productivity.

5C - Systematic Communication
The school executive designs and utilizes various forms of formal and informal communication so that the focus of the school can be on improved student achievement.
Bus Log
Most of the students at Knightdale Elementary ride the bus to and from school. The administrative team uses an excel spreadsheet to document bus, cab and special transportation arrival times and departure times. This allows us to have concrete timings for parents when they call to inquire about a late bus at the stop. We also track any bus changes and substitutions. This is an extra added layer of safety and documentation. Teachers on duty are also able to enter the information when an administrator is absent.

Duty Schedule
Monitoring and maintaining student supervision is very important as a school administrator. We use a lunch duty schedule that is provided to teachers at the beginning of the school year and we send out the updated before school and after school duty schedule each week. These schedules are also kept on the school google drive.

Calendars and Newsletters
I work with the admin team to communicate effectively with all staff members each week. We send out a school-wide newsletter and upcoming calendar of events for the week to remind staff of meetings, events, and visitors. Our communication is efficient and timely as it is sent out on the Thursday before the upcoming week's events.

5D - School Expectations for Student and Staff
The school executive develops and enforces expectations, structures, rules, and procedures for students and staff.
PBIS Posters
During the summer, I took the outdated PBIS posters around the school and redesigned them using kid-friendly language and images. Each poster explained the behavior expectations for the cafeteria, hallway, bathroom, dismissal, gym, and bus.

Staff and Student Handbook
The administrative team created this handbook to help staff and parents understand the rules and expectations at Knightdale Elementary School. We encourage teachers to review the policies in the handbook and for parents to review rules and this document with their child. We refer to this handbook during parent and teacher conferences.

Discipline Referrals and Matrix
As a school, we had a standard discipline matrix that we used across all grade levels. However, we were finding that certain grade levels were struggling with behaviors and student consequences. They also had concerns about the administrative being more responsive to student behavior. In response, we held a focus group with each grade level where we unpacked the current matrix and gave them the autonomy to redesign the matrix to suit the needs and desires of the team. We now have grade-level specific matrices with differentiated consequence sequences while keeping the steps of the process consistent throughout the school.
